Use Contour Line Drawing To Begin a Floral Painting

This is part 1 of a 4-part series where I take you through the many layers of a floral painting.

Contour line drawing, or continuous line drawing, is a sketching technique where you place your pencil on the page and draw an unbroken line until you finish.

It’s a fantastic way to improve your observation skills. The trick is to move quickly and loosely to try and get the general shapes down. You can make it a part of your simple creative practice.

This week’s video shows how I started a floral painting with a continuous line sketch.

I like having a base composition in sketch form to add layers too. It erases the blank page, offers some direction, and can always be painted over if I don’t like it.

All you need is a piece of paper and a pencil to try this out.

This is part 1 of a 4 part series where I take you through each stage of creating a floral painting.
