Exploring Watercolor Swatching With Buff Titanium To Make Creamy Colors
Have you been to one of the epic places out west, like the Grand Canyon or Zion? A couple of years ago Dan and I scheduled a quick, but amazing, road trip, just the two of us. Neither of us had been to that part of the country. It was so different than the very green and lush area of North Carolina we come from. Everything was gorgeous shades of browns and tans, a neutral-lovers dreamland. After dozens of sightseeing pull-offs, a hike through Zion, and hundreds of photos, it was time to head home.
But the inspiration is still sticking around to this day.
Today, I’m mixing the 10 Daniel Smith watercolors from last week with a color called Buff Titanium. This color creates luscious, creamy shades that remind me of the lighter desert shades we came across, like the tumbleweeds, rock faces, and cacti.
Watch the video to see all of the beautiful, creamy colors you can create.
Using a sketchbook to swatch colors and play intuitively isn’t wasting supplies. I had this fear when I first started because art supplies can add up quickly. Over time, I realized that using paint to learn is just as valuable, if not more so, than creating a finished painting.
I paint because it relaxes me and allows me to release my emotions without words. It’s a creative practice for me. My supplies are the investment for that time. Instead of paying for a counselor or joining a yoga studio, I’m making art. If you think about the cost in that way, it’s much easier to use your supplies in a generous and abundant way.
Have you had the limiting belief that art supplies are too expensive? Reframe how you view them and let me know if that helps you feel more free as you create.
